How to Set Up Templates in DSLR Booth (Step-by-Step)
DSLR Booth is the most widely used photo booth software in the industry, and for good reason — the template setup is fast and reliable. But operators who are new to the platform (or switching from another system) often hit a few snags that cost them time at events.
This guide walks you through the complete setup process, from preparing your template file to printing your first photo. If you're comparing DSLR Booth with Darkroom, see our DSLR Booth vs Darkroom comparison for a side-by-side workflow breakdown.
What You Need Before You Start
Before you open DSLR Booth, make sure you have:
- A PNG template file at the correct pixel dimensions for your chosen size. SnapTemplate delivers all files at the exact resolution DSLR Booth expects — no resizing needed. See the full size reference for pixel dimensions.
- Transparent cutouts where photos should appear. DSLR Booth places captured photos behind the overlay, so any area that isn't transparent will cover the photo.
- Your print size selected before importing. The template dimensions must match the output size you've configured in DSLR Booth.
If you're using a SnapTemplate instant download or custom design, the file is already in the correct format. No conversion or editing required.
Step-by-Step Setup
Step 1: Choose Your Print Size
Open DSLR Booth and go to Settings > Print Layout. Select the output size that matches your template:
| Template Size | DSLR Booth Setting | Pixel Dimensions | |---------------|-------------------|-----------------| | 2x6 Strip | 2x6 | 600 x 1800 | | 4x6 Portrait | 4x6 | 1200 x 1800 | | 6x4 Landscape | 6x4 | 1800 x 1200 | | 5x7 Portrait | 5x7 | 1500 x 2100 | | 6x8 Portrait | 6x8 | 1800 x 2400 |
This step matters. If the output size doesn't match the template dimensions, you'll get cropping, stretching, or white borders. For digital-only events (no printing), you can also use the Square, Portrait 9:16, or Landscape 16:9 sizes — just set the output resolution to match.
Step 2: Import Your Template Overlay
Navigate to Settings > Overlay (or Template depending on your DSLR Booth version). Click Browse and select your PNG file.
DSLR Booth will display a preview showing how photos will appear behind the overlay. The transparent areas in your PNG are where guest photos will show through.
Quick check: If your overlay appears solid (no photo showing through), your PNG file may not have transparency. Re-export it as a PNG-24 with transparency enabled, or use a SnapTemplate file which always includes proper transparency.
Step 3: Configure Photo Layout
If your template has multiple photo slots (common with 2x6 strips and 6x4 landscape layouts), configure the photo box positions:
- Go to Settings > Photo Layout
- Set the number of photos per print (usually 3-4 for strips, 1 for postcards)
- Adjust the position and size of each photo box to align with the transparent areas in your template
For single-photo layouts (4x6 Portrait, 5x7, 6x8), this step is simpler — just ensure the single photo box fills the transparent area.
Tip: SnapTemplate designs use standard photo box positions that align with DSLR Booth's default layout presets. In most cases, the default positioning works without manual adjustment.
Step 4: Test Print
Before the event, always run a test:
- Take a test photo (or use a sample image)
- Check that the photo appears correctly within the template frame
- Verify text and design elements aren't cropped at the edges
- Print one copy and check for color accuracy and alignment
If anything looks off, see the troubleshooting section below.
Step 5: Save as a Preset
Once your template is set up and tested, save the entire configuration as a DSLR Booth preset. This lets you reload the same setup instantly at the event — or reuse it for future events with the same template.
Name your presets clearly: Smith-Wedding-2026-4x6 is more useful than Template-1 when you're switching between events.
Common Mistakes and Fixes
Template appears stretched or cropped
Cause: The output size in DSLR Booth doesn't match the template's pixel dimensions. Fix: Check the size table above. A 4x6 template (1200x1800) loaded into a 2x6 setting (600x1800) will be distorted. Match the settings exactly.
Photos appear on top of the template instead of behind it
Cause: The file is being loaded as a background instead of an overlay. Fix: Make sure you're importing the file in the Overlay section, not the Background section. Overlays render on top of photos; backgrounds render behind them.
White borders around the template
Cause: The template has a slightly smaller resolution than the output size, or the printer alignment is off. Fix: Verify pixel dimensions match exactly. For printer alignment, ensure your template extends all the way to the edges — or add 2-3mm bleed if you're printing. See design mistakes to avoid for more on bleed.
Text or design elements look blurry
Cause: The template file resolution is too low for the print size. Fix: All print templates should be 300 DPI. At 300 DPI, a 4x6 print is 1200x1800 pixels. If your file is smaller than this, it will appear soft when printed. SnapTemplate files are always delivered at the correct DPI for each size.
Template loads but the preview is blank
Cause: The PNG file is fully transparent (no visible design elements), or the file is corrupted. Fix: Open the PNG in any image viewer to verify it looks correct. If it's a SnapTemplate file and appears blank, re-download it — the original download may have been interrupted.
Workflow Tips for Event Day
Pre-load your templates. Before you arrive at the venue, load and test every template you'll need. Don't set up templates for the first time on-site.
Organize your file system. Keep templates in folders by client and date: /Templates/2026-04-Smith-Wedding/4x6-portrait.png. This makes finding the right file instant, even under pressure.
Bring backup sizes. If you're printing 4x6 at a wedding, having the 2x6 strip version ready as a backup gives you options if the client or guests request it. With SnapTemplate, extra sizes are just $5 each.
Test with different photo types. Your test photo should include a group shot (to check that multiple people fit within the frame), a solo shot, and a silly/action pose. Templates that look great with a centered headshot sometimes have issues with off-center or full-body photos.
