Choosing the Right Template Size for Your Booth

February 17, 20265 min readBy SnapTemplate Team

One of the most common questions we get from photo booth operators is: "Which size do I need?" With 15 options across three categories, it can feel overwhelming at first. But once you understand how sizes map to booth types, the choice is straightforward.

Print Sizes (5 options)

These are your bread-and-butter templates for DSLR booths that print physical photos on-site. All print sizes are designed at 300 DPI for sharp, professional output.

| Size | Pixels | Photos | Best For | |------|--------|--------|----------| | 2x6 Strip | 600 × 1800 | 3 | Classic photo strip — most popular format overall | | 4x6 Portrait | 1200 × 1800 | 1 | Standard postcard with large design area | | 6x4 Landscape | 1800 × 1200 | 3 | Landscape postcard — group shots side by side | | 5x7 Portrait | 1500 × 2100 | 1 | Larger format for premium events | | 6x8 Portrait | 1800 × 2400 | 1 | Extra-large — maximum visual impact |

Most popular: The 2x6 Strip is the default choice for most events. It's the format guests recognize and expect from a photo booth. The 4x6 Portrait is the second most popular — it gives more room for design and works well for weddings where a single-photo keepsake is preferred.

Pro tip: Match the template size to your printer's paper size. If you're printing on 4x6 paper, use the 4x6 Portrait or cut 2x6 strips from a 4x6 sheet (two strips per page). The 5x7 and 6x8 sizes require larger paper and a printer that supports them.

These sizes work with DSLR Booth, Darkroom Booth, LumaBooth, Breeze, and other print booth software. For a comparison of template setup workflows, see DSLR Booth vs Darkroom: Template Setup Compared.

Digital / Social Sizes (5 options)

Designed for screen output — social media sharing, digital galleries, email delivery, and display kiosks.

| Size | Pixels | Aspect Ratio | Best For | |------|--------|-------------|----------| | Square | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | Instagram posts, social sharing | | Portrait 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | Stories, Reels, TikTok | | Landscape 16:9 | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | Widescreen displays, TV slideshows | | Square Large | 1600 × 1600 | 1:1 | High-res social, digital kiosks | | Square XL | 1800 × 1800 | 1:1 | Maximum resolution square format |

Most popular: The Square (1080x1080) is the most versatile digital size. It works on every social platform, looks good in digital galleries, and renders fast. If the event is social-media-focused (brand activations, influencer events), the Portrait 9:16 is essential — it's the native format for Instagram Stories, TikTok, and Reels.

When to use digital vs. print: If you're running a RevoSpin, Simple Booth HALO, or any digital-first setup, use digital sizes. If your booth prints AND shares digitally, order both a print size and a digital size — it's only $5 extra per additional size.

These sizes work with RevoSpin 360, Simple Booth HALO, Touchpix, Snappic, and other digital-sharing platforms.

360 / Video Booth Sizes (5 options)

Transparent overlays designed specifically for 360 video booths. These sit on top of the video output — the center stays transparent so the subject shows through.

| Size | Pixels | Aspect Ratio | Best For | |------|--------|-------------|----------| | 360 Portrait | 1072 × 1440 | ~3:4 | Standard vertical 360 video — most common | | 360 Square | 1072 × 1072 | 1:1 | Square-crop 360 content | | 360 Landscape | 1440 × 1072 | ~4:3 | Horizontal output screens | | 360 Wide | 1920 × 1072 | ~16:9 | Cinematic widescreen video | | 360 Tall | 1072 × 1920 | ~9:16 | Full-height vertical — Stories/TikTok |

Most popular: Start with 360 Portrait — it's the default output size for most 360 platforms. Add 360 Tall if clients want Instagram Stories or TikTok-optimized output.

How to Decide: Quick Decision Framework

Step 1 — What type of booth are you running?

| Booth Type | Size Category | |-----------|---------------| | DSLR / print booth | Print sizes | | Digital / sharing booth | Digital sizes | | 360 / video booth | 360 overlay sizes | | Hybrid (print + digital) | One print + one digital size |

Step 2 — What's the final output?

  • Printed photo keepsake → 2x6 Strip or 4x6 Portrait
  • Instagram/social post → Square 1080x1080
  • Instagram Stories / TikTok → Portrait 9:16 or 360 Tall
  • Event display / TV → Landscape 16:9 or 360 Wide
  • 360 video overlay → 360 Portrait (default) or 360 Tall (Stories)

Step 3 — Need multiple sizes?

Add any additional size for $5. Common combinations:

  • Wedding: 2x6 Strip (prints) + Square (Instagram sharing)
  • Corporate: 4x6 Portrait (prints) + Portrait 9:16 (LinkedIn Stories)
  • 360 activation: 360 Portrait (standard) + 360 Tall (TikTok)

The Safe Defaults

If you're not sure, these are the most versatile starting points:

  • DSLR / print booths: 2x6 Strip
  • Digital / RevoSpin booths: Square 1080x1080
  • 360 video booths: 360 Portrait
