The Complete Guide to 360 Booth Overlays

March 11, 20266 min readBy SnapTemplate Team

360 booths are one of the fastest-growing segments in the photo booth industry. But the overlay game is different from traditional DSLR print templates. If you're making the jump to 360 — or want to improve your current setup — here's everything you need to know.

What Is a 360 Overlay?

A 360 overlay is a transparent PNG that sits on top of the video output from a 360 booth. Unlike print templates where the photo is placed inside the design, a 360 overlay is placed on top of the video, framing each frame of the slow-motion clip.

The key difference: 360 overlays need transparent backgrounds so the video shows through. Only the border, text, and design elements are opaque. The center of the frame stays completely clear so the spinning subject is fully visible.

Choosing the Right Size

SnapTemplate offers five 360 overlay sizes, each designed for a different output format:

| Size | Dimensions | Best For | When to Use | |------|-----------|----------|-------------| | 360 Portrait | 1072 × 1440 | Standard vertical 360 video | Most common — default choice for RevoSpin and Spinner 360 | | 360 Square | 1072 × 1072 | Square-crop social media | Instagram feed posts, gallery displays | | 360 Landscape | 1440 × 1072 | Horizontal output screens | Event displays, TV monitors at receptions | | 360 Wide | 1920 × 1072 | Cinematic widescreen video | Premium setups, brand activations | | 360 Tall | 1072 × 1920 | Full vertical / Stories format | Instagram Stories, TikTok, Reels |

Start with 360 Portrait for standard 360 booth output — it's the most common format and works with the default video settings on most platforms. If your clients specifically want content optimized for Instagram Stories or TikTok, add 360 Tall (matches the 9:16 aspect ratio that performs best on those platforms).

Design Rules for 360 Overlays

360 overlays have unique constraints that print templates don't. Getting these right is the difference between an overlay that looks professional and one that ruins the video.

Keep elements at the edges

The center of the frame is where the subject stands and spins. Any design elements in the middle will obstruct the person. Stick to borders, corners, and edges. A good rule of thumb: keep all design elements within the outer 15–20% of the frame.

Use bold, readable text

Text on video needs to be larger and bolder than on print. Thin fonts and small text get lost when there's motion behind them. Stick to bold or semi-bold weights at generous sizes. Sans-serif fonts generally perform better for readability on video than script or serif fonts.

Design for symmetry

The video shows a slow-motion spin — the subject rotates through every angle. Asymmetric designs can look unbalanced from certain angles. Centered, symmetric layouts look good from every perspective. If you do use asymmetric elements, place them at the very top or bottom where they're less affected by the rotation.

Mind the corner radius

Some 360 software applies a slight corner radius to the output. Don't place critical text or design elements in the extreme corners — leave a small safe margin.

Test with actual video

What looks good as a static image might not work when there's a spinning person in the middle. Always preview your overlay on real 360 footage before the event. Most 360 software has a preview mode — use it.

Software Compatibility

Most 360 booth software supports PNG overlays with the same workflow:

  1. Export your overlay as a PNG with transparency
  2. Import into your 360 software as an overlay layer
  3. Position it (usually full-frame, centered)
  4. The software composites the overlay on top of each video frame during processing

Platform-Specific Notes

RevoSpin 360 — The industry leader for 360 video booths. Full PNG overlay support. Uses the overlay as a compositing layer over the raw video. All five SnapTemplate 360 sizes are compatible.

Spinner 360 — Similar workflow to RevoSpin. PNG overlays import directly. Supports all standard 360 dimensions.

Snappic — Cloud-based platform that supports both photo and 360 modes. PNG overlays work in both modes. Snappic processes video in the cloud, so the overlay is applied server-side after capture.

For the full list of supported software and recommended sizes per platform, see the compatibility guide.

Static vs. Animated Overlays

Some operators use animated overlays (video files or animated GIFs) for extra visual impact — sparkle effects, moving borders, or animated text reveals.

SnapTemplate focuses on high-quality static PNG overlays because:

  • They work with every 360 platform without compatibility issues
  • They don't add processing overhead to video rendering
  • The design quality is consistent across every frame
  • They're simpler to set up and less likely to cause issues on event day

For most events, a well-designed static overlay looks professional and is much simpler to set up. If you want animation, most 360 software offers built-in effects (slow-mo speed ramps, particle effects, transitions) that can be layered on top of a static overlay.

Pricing Your 360 Overlay Service

360 overlays are a premium product — clients expect to pay more than for standard photo booth prints. Here are some pricing benchmarks from the operator community:

  • Basic 360 package (no overlay): $300–500 per event
  • 360 with custom-branded overlay: $500–800 per event
  • Premium 360 with custom overlay + animation: $800–1,200+ per event

The overlay itself is a small cost relative to the package price:

  • Instant download from SnapTemplate: $15
  • Custom branded overlay: $25 (PSD + PNG, 3-day delivery)
  • Additional sizes: $5 each (e.g., add 360 Tall for TikTok in addition to 360 Portrait)

That means the overlay adds $15–30 to your costs but allows you to charge $200–400+ more per event. It's one of the highest-margin upsells available to booth operators.

Getting Your 360 Overlays

Two options:

  • Instant downloads — Pick a design, enter your event text, and get a print-ready PNG overlay in seconds. From $15. Works with any 360 software.
  • Custom designs — Our designer creates a unique overlay to match your client's branding. PSD + PNG delivered in 3 business days. From $25.

Both include all five 360 sizes. Order additional formats for just $5 per extra size if your client needs multiple aspect ratios.

Browse party templates and corporate templates for designs that work especially well as 360 overlays. For a step-by-step walkthrough of loading overlays into your 360 software, see How to Set Up 360 Booth Overlays.
